Smoking, Wealth Accumulation and the Propensity to Plan

چکیده
We investigate the relationship between wealth, smoking, and individual propensities to plan. Planning propensity affects wealth but not smoking, suggesting that planning is not an allpurpose skill. Financial planning may draw on different abilities than those that facilitate smoking cessation. ∗ This research has been supported in part by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Substance Abuse Research Program. “Why Mature Smokers Don’t Quit?” We thank Jim Bettman, Andrew Caplin, John Leahy and Mary Frances Luce for helpful comments. Wealth Accumulation and the Propensity to Plan
Why do similar households end up with very different levels of wealth? We show that differences in the attitudes and skills with which they approach financial planning are a significant factor. We use new and unique survey data to assess these differences and to measure each household’s “propensity to plan.” We show that those with a higher such propensity spend more time developing financial p...

The intuition that population density increases the propensity of an epidemic to spread in cities is correct in the sense that increased density likely leads to an increase in the contact rate of an individual, which makes the reproduction number larger and leads to larger infectious disease outbreaks in dense areas. A wealth of research already suggests that smoking suppresses immune function ...

The private pension structure in the United States, once dominated by defined benefit (DB) plans, is currently divided between defined contribution (DC) and DB plans. Wealth accumulation in DC plans depends on the participant's contribution behavior and on financial market returns, while accumulation in DB plans is sensitive to a participant's labor market experience and to plan parameters. Thi...
